“The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page” – Saint Augustine Quote T-Shirt
This classic sinner turned saint has arguably done more than any other theologian to shape Western Christianity and philosophy. Born in 354 AD in Northern Africa to Saint Monica (saint-hood apparently runs in the family), Augustine, a life-long bachelor, embraced a life of partying and frat-boy living until his conversion at age 31. At this point his writing began to shape much of current classic Christian doctrine, for both Protestants and Catholics alike. His most well known works include his Confessions (in which he recount his youthful days of reckless living) and the City of God (a treatise on the Christian Church and its relation to secular society, a topic remaining relevant in much of the Western world). His title of “St. Augustine of Hippo” emanated from his appointment to the bishopric in 395 AD in Hippo, Algeria. Augustine died in 430 AD and was declared a saint and canonized by the Catholic Church post-mortem. In 1298, Pope Boniface declared him a Doctor of the Church. Today, many Protestants also see him as a sort of theological ancestor of prominent reformer Martin Luther, particularly for his emphasis on the theme of saving grace.
