“Not all those who wander are lost” – J.R.R. Tolkien Quote T-Shirt
Most associate this 20th century British writer with hobbits, C.S. Lewis, and a group of philosophically-minded novelists known as the Inklings, and rightly so. But Tolkien was also a native South African, raised by a single mom and then a Catholic priest in Britain. He studied Anglo-Saxon and Germanic languages at Oxford College before he fought in World War I. Tolkien married before being sent to the Western Front, and upon his return from battle, became a professor at Oxford, where he founded the Inklings,a group of writers including C.S. Lewis. It was at home in Oxford when he also started penning The Hobbit, a sort of prequel to his Lord of the Rings Trilogy. It is fairly safe to assume that Tolkien is partially responsible for bringing Lewis back to Christianity during the Inklings time. Tolkien, a Catholic, frequently discussed religious matters with Lewis, who was then an agnostic. Moreover, some have seen Tolkien’s LOTR stories to be allegories of World War II or the Cold War, while others see them as allegories of Christianity. Tolkien himself never claimed either, saying instead that they were simply stories to be taken at face value. Undoubtedly, however, they are a reflection of a man who was at once a linguist, scholar, Christian, and war veteran. He died in September of 1973, and since then his son has pursued completing some of his father’s work, and his novels have been adapted into hit epic films.
