“The mountains are calling and I must go” – John Muir quote T-Shirt
John Muir is perhaps to the West Coast what Henry David Thoreau was to the East Coast. Revered for his love and advocacy of all things natural, wild, and free, Muir is best known for his adventures into the wilderness and his tireless work with the American government to keep her lands free from environmental dangers. Not many people can boast of camping with the president, but Muir spent three nights camping in Yosemite with President Theodore Roosevelt. In 1916, Muir continued his work as a protector of America’s wild lands by founding the National Parks Service. Thanks to Muir, visitors still come from all over the world to tour America’s natural wonders, such as the Sequoia National Forest, Mt. Rainier, and the Grand Canyon. Not surprisingly, Muir was partnered with other conservationist-minded Americans and formed the Sierra Club. While other nature lovers, like Ansel Adams, relied on photography to capture the beauty of America’s forests, rivers, and streams, Muir used his writing. People today place his words on the walls of their homes, even if they never travel California’s John Muir Trail, or JMT as hikers call it, themselves.
