“Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing” – Helen Keller Quote T-Shirt
Born into a military family near the turn of the 20th century (1880 in Alabama to be exact), Helen was 19 months old when she became blind and deaf, possibly due to a childhood disease such as scarlet fever or rubella. This resulted in an obstinate and unmanageable personality for the young girl, that is until Anne Sullivan walked into her life on March 3, 1887. Anne’s story is perhaps just as intriguing as Helen’s herself, as she transformed the life of this spoiled but intelligent young woman into a story for the ages, one that has been captured in the play The Miracle Worker. Thanks to her teacher, Helen learned language by having the letters of objects spelled into her hand, such as “w-a-t-e-r” when Helen’s other hand was placed under rushing water. Eventually, she became quite the pupil, graduating from Radcliffe College in 1904 as the first ever blind graduate. Her autobiography The Story of My Life was published in 1903, only the beginning of a lifelong dedication to social and political activism for deaf and blind individuals. She died in 1968, the friend of Eleanor Roosevelt, Albert Einstein, Henry Ford, John F. Kennedy, and many other notable personages.
