“Don’t tell me how educated you are, tell me how much you traveled” – Mohammed Quote T-Shirt
Clearly a man who has changed the face of history and single handedly has had the greatest impact on the middle eastern world since the Middle Ages, Muhammad was born in Mecca (now in Saudi Arabia) in 570 AD. Early in his life, Muhammad started off in the service of a wealthy businesswoman, who he eventually married, 15 years her junior. They were prosperous, as was Mecca at the time, and yet Muhammad was dissatisfied with the idolatry of the people around him. So, began to spend meditation time in a local cave. It was during these retreats that he was visited by visions from the archangel Gabriel and words were spoken to him poetically, verses which eventually formed the Qur’an. Although Muhammad was well respected and generally known for being generous and honest, Muhammad’s prophecies were not well received by his Meccan tribesman. He and the followers he had amassed moved to Medina, where the first Muslim community grew. However, around this time, Muhammad’s military career began as the Meccans pursued him in battle. Muhammad was successful, though, and Muslims gained the right to move freely throughout Arabia. By the time Muuhammad moved back to Medina for good, most of the Arabian peninsula had converted to Islam. In fact in 632 AD, the year he died, Muhammad led tens of thousands of people in a pilgrimage to Mecca. Muslims throughout the world accept Muhammad as the last of the prophets of God.
